Empowering the Autism Community: The Work of the Autism Society San Diego
For nearly six decades, the Autism Society San Diego has stood as a vital pillar of advocacy, education, and inclusion for individuals and families affected by autism across the region. As a nonprofit affiliate of the National Autism Society of America, our organization is driven by its mission to improve the lives of all affected by autism through programs that foster connection, understanding, and opportunity.
At the heart of the Autism Society San Diego’s work is its commitment to building community. The organization provides a welcoming environment for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families through a range of programs and services. One of its most popular initiatives is Camp I CAN (Inclusion, Confidence, Awareness, and Networking)—a summer day camp that gives children and teens with autism a chance to enjoy traditional camp activities while developing social and recreational skills in a supportive setting.
The society also hosts monthly family events, support groups, and educational workshops designed to meet the diverse needs of San Diego’s autism community. These gatherings help parents and caregivers share experiences, learn from professionals, and find encouragement in knowing they are not alone.
Education and advocacy remain central to the organization’s mission. The Autism Society San Diego advances these goals through the Autism Social & Mental Health Conference, the Autism Ask Line, and specialized training offered to community members. These programs provide essential education, resources, and guidance to individuals, families, and professionals seeking to better understand and support the autism community. In addition to education, the organization actively advocates for greater access to safe, affordable, and inclusive housing options for autistic individuals, recognizing that stable housing is vital for independence and quality of life. Each April, the organization also leads local Autism Acceptance Month events, emphasizing inclusion, understanding, and the celebration of the unique strengths and contributions of autistic individuals.
Looking ahead, the Autism Society San Diego is preparing to celebrate a major milestone—its 60th anniversary in 2026. To honor six decades of service, advocacy, and community impact, the organization will host a special anniversary gala, bringing together families, supporters, and partners to celebrate its history and future.
As the year draws to a close, the Autism Society San Diego invites the community to take part in its mission through end-of-year giving. Every donation—big or small—directly supports local programs, camps, and services that make a real difference for families across San Diego County.
